The Fisheries Data Interoperability Working Group presented its early achievements at the RDA Plenary meeting in Montreal, Canada.

The session explained how the usage of the R programming language as orchestrator to manage metadata, data complying with OGC standards and controlled vocabularies is supporting the Tuna Fisheries Use Case. But it didn’t stop there. The session was organised as a side event to extend its scope to other fishery-related fields and beyond: for example to the marine or earth observations domain.

Researchers, scientists, representatives of the public and the private sector with an interest in data harmonization, exchange and standardization and metadata standards were invited to join the session.

Specific Objectives:

1. To provide an overview of the work accomplished on fisheries data interoperability, in line with the work plan presented at the 9th plenary meeting session in Barcelona; and as proposal for a set of standards for fishery datasets: for (meta)data formats, access protocols and controlled vocabularies.

2. To present & demonstrate methodology and tools developed as a framework for metadata cataloguing, data access & discovery applied in the case of Tuna Fisheries to illustrate how we can deal with Fisheries Data Interoperability

3. To promote its use and adoption by a larger audience (in fishery-related fields and others); and to strengthen synergies with RDA groups (in particular in cross-data domains such agriculture and marine data; and metadata/data discovery related groups)



  1. Short overview of RDA FDI working group, the activities, and presentation of co-chairs
  2. Overview of the work accomplished, according to the work plan;
  3. Presentation of the FDI workflow for metadata cataloguing, data access & discovery, including fishery data vocabularies, methodology and tools (R packages)
  4. Establish or Strengthen synergies with other RDA groups and user communities (eg marine domain beyond fisheries, geospatial data, biodiversity, agricultural data, Virtual Research environments..).

The objective of the Fisheries Data Interoperability Working Group (FDIWG) is to devise a global data exchange and integration framework to support scientific advice on stock status and fisheries management that builds on fisheries data. The proposed framework will facilitate the use of de-facto, and preferably open, standards for the identification, description, mapping and publication of fisheries data supporting scientific processes.
