Great news for the Blue Growth Sector! Last month on July 16th, the European Commission decided to simplify the regulations regarding data collection in the fisheries sector, making it easier to comply with EU rules. This will also increase the quality and amount of data available on fish stocks. This will further develop scientific knowledge of the ways in which fisheries affect marine and maritime ecosystems, and allow action to be taken to accomplish the EU’s goal of sustainable fisheries by 2020.

In June of last year, the European Commission proposed to simplify the regulations surrounding data collection, and this proposal is currently under discussion in the European Parliament and Council. However, the recent July 16th decision will ensure that  data collection continues unencumbered in the interim.
